Right-Wing Media and the Political Reality It Creates

Right-Wing Media and the Political Reality It Creates

If you’re reading this, you likely more or less agree with my opinions, or at least tolerate them. Otherwise, you would have clicked the “unsubscribe” link long ago.

And from that perspective, you probably wonder how, according to the polls, tens of millions of Amercans can continue to support Donald Trump. I admit, it’s a mystery to me.

In search of an answer I decided to try reading where those on the far political right go to find their news. I haven’t been watching their TV shows or listening to their radio shows or podcasts. Just seeing what’s in print. (Fox News is in a class by itself, and the topic for another day).

Here’s a sampling of the headlined articles I’d been reading from the past few days.

How Right-Wing Media Shapes Public Perception

Everyone has his or her bias when it comes to what’s real and useful in the world of news and opinion. But imagine what a person’s political view must be if this is your regular news diet.

Okay, I’ve selected some extreme examples. But to find them I’ve scrolled through a thicket of black is white, truth is false articles. And the sources above are mostly considered the mainstream right. The Daily Caller (Tucker Carlson’s site), for example, gets about 4.5 million monthly readers. The Blaze (Glenn Beck’s) claims a worldwide audience of 165 million over all its platforms—print, TV, podcasts, etc.)

I didn’t venture off the cliff into the most extreme right publications.

My point? This is '“mainstream” news for tens of millions of people. And it goes a long way toward explaining why, despite all else, Donald Trump’s poll numbers are not lower than they are.

I’ve performed this service so you don’t need to. Now, excuse me while I try to mentally recover from my trip to Wonderland.
