Hopeful News from the Front Lines of Our 'Hail Mary' Fight to Limit Global Warming
 

One of this year’s most popular new movies is Hail Mary. If you haven’t seen it, or read the book that the movie’s based on, here’s the story.

Astrophage, an alien microbe, is absorbing the sun's energy. Unless scientists find a way to kill the microbe, life on Earth will cease as lack of sunlight causes an extinction level ice age. The nations of the world pool their resources to send a manned spaceship, the Hail Mary, to the only nearby star that seems to be immune to astrophage. The mission is discover why that star is immune, find a cure there and send it back to Earth.

It’s a good story, well told. If it reminds you of another story you’ve likely heard of, think about our very real extinction level threat, not from a cooling sun, but a heating one. Not an ice age, but one where in a few centuries, perhaps even generations, Earth becomes inhospitable for humanity.

With every new record-breaking 100 degree+ summer, each calamitous fire season and category 5 hurricane, the extinction dial ticks up another notch from cautionary yellow to inevitable red.

 

Scroll Past the Headlines to See Real Progress

So, is our species doomed because Donald Trump doesn’t want wind mills spoiling the view from his Scotland golf course? Or because the fossil fuel lobby has Congress too handcuffed by campaign money to act?

Actually, no. In fact, if you scroll past the headlines, to the front lines of climate control action, the fight to save life on this beautiful blue planet looks increasingly promising.

Some things happening right now:

--Renewable energy officially has surpassed coal as the world's largest single source of electricity.

--One of the fastest growing consumer energy trends is plug-in solar panels. Instead of requiring expensive professional installation, you simply hang them from any railing or set them on a patio and plug the cord directly into a standard household wall outlet.

--In the European Union, renewables have reached nearly half (48%) of the grid, successfully forcing fossil generation into an absolute decline.

--In May, California generated 51% of its total electricity from power.

--Globally, 25% of all new car sales are electric.

--China has built a 250-mile solar wall in the desert, displacing millions of tons of coal usage.

Global Clean Energy Trends Changing the Game

--Wind energy now supplies more than 100% of Scotland’s annual electricity demand and even generates excess electricity that Scotland transmits to England and Europe.

--The largest clean energy initiative in U.S. history, the SunZia project, is delivering high voltage to New Mexico, Arizona and California.

--Texas is the U.S. leader in utility-scale solar development and manufacturing, accounting for about 40% of new solar installations in 2026.

--South America already has one of the cleanest power grids in the world, with renewable electricity generation hitting roughly 65% to 80% of all newly installed capacity.

--Africa is experiencing an unprecedented clean energy boom, fueled by homeowners and businesses cutting their cords from diesel.

The speed with which the world is moving away from fossil fuels is astonishing.

And here’s the promise of the near future…

Researchers at Michigan State University have developed transparent solar technology that allows windows to generate electricity while remaining largely clear to the human eye. The technology could eventually transform skyscrapers, offices, and homes into electricity-generating buildings.

Wild Future Science Giving Us Reason to Hope

Engineers in Finland have successfully transmitted electrical power wirelessly. Early experiments prove it delivers usable electricity at efficiency levels viable for real-world neighborhoods.

China is planning a massive space-based solar power station, allowing it to capture sunlight continuously. Japan has successfully transmitted electricity from space back to Earth, validating the concept.

Private companies are developing a tidal energy project in Nova Scotia, using floating tidal turbines to generate renewable electricity from the Bay of Fundy's powerful tidal currents.

Denmark is developing a system that uses basalt stone thermal batteries as a low-cost, long-duration energy storage.

Denmark is developing an artificial energy island in the North Sea designed to collect and distribute electricity generated by vast offshore wind farms.

Researchers in Germany have developed an advanced moisture-harvesting material capable of extracting water directly from dry air while also providing highly efficient passive cooling for buildings.

British solar innovators have pioneered a tandem solar cell that squeezes the work of two separate cells into a single footprint, nearly doubling energy efficiency.

When the fight to keep Earth from warming began the goal was to achieve a limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius. We’ve already blown through that target. Our ability to stop warming from increasing to 2.0 is in serious doubt. Unless science can devise a way to roll back those numbers, earthlings will need to adjust to what we have and somewhat worse as a new normal. But the speed with which we are collectively responding now shows promise that limits are possible.

Future humans may not need to abandon the planet after all. Unless alien microbes like Hail Mary’s astrophage don’t begin eating the warmth of the sun.
